The term is usually associated with art in which the traditions of the past have been thrown aside in a spirit of experimentation.

Modern contemporary art styles. The inception of modern design happened at the peak of the modern art movement, informed by scandinavian and german bauhaus design. Contemporary art is a very hard movement to define but has been categorized as any art made in our lifetime, in the late 20th and early 21st century, following the modern and postmodern art. Art made thereafter (e.g., conceptual, minimalist, postmodern, feminist) is considered contemporary.

Modern art is that which was created sometime between the 1860s (some say the 1880s) and the late 1960s (some say only through the 1950s). First, there was modernism, then came contemporary interior design. Modern vs contemporary interior design ‘contemporary’ and ‘modern’ are often used interchangeably but, although there are similarities, they are two distinct design styles from different periods.

Modern art came before contemporary art. Contemporary is different from modern because it describes design based on the here and now. Modern art relates to the art made around the industrial revolution in the late 19th century, which then had a massive impact on the art movements that are largely confused with contemporary art.

The primary difference separating modern and contemporary design style is that modern is a strict interpretation of design that started in the 20th century. The tenet that genuine art is not limited to a physical object, such as a drawing or a painting, rather is an idea or concept, is the foundation of conceptual art. They make you think, wonder and question.

The style is a precursor to contemporary design, with key figures including le corbusier, charles and ray eames, and florence knoll. Most art historians and critics put the beginning of modern art in the west at around the 1860s, continuing up to the 1960s. Whereas, contemporary art means art made in the present day.

Postmodernism is bold, breaks all rules of tradition, and has a certain whimsy and irony about it. It is more about the form than the function,. Beyond the time frames, there are conceptual and aesthetic differences between the two phases.
